Add to that the fiddly parts of the rules, and the game was initially harder to learn than it had to be for what is an otherwise dead simple system. The VP/income track is also confusing for new players, and the graphic design doesn't help them along. The canals could have contrasted a bit more with the rails as well. And some of the connections can be tricky to determine at a glance. I like how they've made a hierarchy of information for the basic resource buildings, but I'd still like starker, larger symbology for VP, income, and links on the cards. When the industry types are clumped together, they're hard to read, especially across the table. I know they were going for a very particular tone, but they've sacrificed clarity on the board, especially on the night side. That being said, I find the graphic design abysmal. But get their second, and you'll lose it all. A tough, unforgiving game where playing your cards right can make you very wealthy. For a tight euro about trains, it is very thematic. This is Oliver Twist's England, orphans underfoot, severe women in fancy dresses grayed by the smog, fat old tycoons with sideburns and permanent frowns. This is loud machinery piercing the pastoral council side. This isn't Terraforming Mars where your hand is a bloody playground and the red planet is your oyster. And playing the game, stringing together successful combos, it's hard work. It just feels industrial and dirty and hard-working. Gives me a nostalgia for what I assume was an absolutely awful time for most people working in industrialized Britain. The striking card art, the iron and brass work flourishes, the design of the board, the extremely British location names, even the rails themselves, lend the game a certain whimsy.
